International Education Week

International Education Week (IEW) has been celebrated annually since its inception in 2000 by the US Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Murray State University invites faculty, staff, and students to participate each year by proposing a session, performance, forum, or other scholarly or creative work that celebrates international education.

The 2017 Schedule of Events is unfolding now. Please send your Murray State IEW events to the Institute for International Studies to be formally included in the IEW program. Then check back here regularly for session updates. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise indicated in the schedule below. Questions? Email us.

It's Good to be Blue: A Nursing Study Abroad Blue Zone Experience in Sardinia, Italy

-Jessica Naber, RN, PhD

-Libby Landes

-Tory Johnson

A nursing professor, along with 17 nursing students, traveled to Sardinia, Italy in May, 2017 to explore the culture, lifestyles, and ultimately the Power 9 at work. In Sardinia, students visited and interviewed centenarians in their homes, visited local markets and stores, met with longevity experts, visited a winery and olive oil mill, participated in a cooking class, and visited Blue Zone villages.

There are 5 identified Blue Zones, and there are nine common characteristics among these five locations, known as the Power 9. These common characteristics include information pertaining to diet, exercise, relationships, and spirituality. Sardinia, Italy was the first identified Blue Zone, and it has the greatest concentration of male centenarians in the world.

The plan is to implement Blue Zone ideals locally and potentially to implement the Blue Zone Project with the help of the Blue Zone experts.

A Fulbrighter's Reflections on Higher Education in India

-Melanie McCallon Seib

Receiving a Fulbright-Nehru International Education Administrators grant to study the Indian higher education system was initially a great honor, followed by mild panic, pure bliss, and finally unfathomable respect. To say this grant opened my eyes is ludicrous, it taught me that I can see to begin with. I will discuss the Indian higher education system and the effect that we so often tout in study abroad presentations: the transformative impact of international experience.
